An evening workshop was recently held by East Surrey Walkers to help walk leaders use smartphones in planning and navigating a group walk. There were also members attending from Guildford, Mole Valley and Reigate groups with the aim they they would then run a similar workshop for walk leaders in their own group. The development of navigation apps on smartphones has provided walk leaders with a facility that can be a real benefit. Based upon the experience of this first trial workshop, a second half day workshop is planned for other Surrey groups.
After a general introduction to GPS devices, participants will be shown how walks can be planned using online resources. The functionality of Viewranger on a desktop/laptop computer will be explained and participants will be shown how to create a walk from scratch, the use of gpx files and how you can record a walk or follow a walk that has previously been created on Viewranger, with attendees following along on their own Android or iPhone devices. Finally all this is put into practice with a short excursion outdoors (in small groups).
For this next workshop, a location that is generally central to most groups in Surrey will be chosen, subject to having good internet access. Again the intention is that attendees will represent their own group and be prepared to run a subsequent workshop for their group’s walk leaders. In order to gain full benefit, participants will be limited to a maximum of 10.
